A Community Energy Program to Decarbonize the Community

In 2025, the City and Town of Ithaca each adopted two local laws and a plan to enable a community wide energy transition.

This has two components: (1) collective electricity and gas purchasing known as Community Choice Aggregation (CCA); and (2) the development of hyper-local renewable energy facilities known as Distributed Energy Resources (DER).

TWO SEPARATE, COMPLEMENTARY PROGRAMS

CCA, a state-authorized program to buy energy, uses OPT-OUT; Own My Power a municipally authorized program to invest in, own and operate onsite renewable power, heat and vehicle energy technologies, uses OPT-IN

CCA engages the residents and businesses to purchase electricity and gas supply using a public education and opt-out enrollment process.

"Own Your Power," T-GEN's service to offer onsite renewable power, heat, and vehicle ownership opportunities that are adaptable to different kinds of participants in onsite DERs, such as renters, building owners, owner-occupants and vehicle users.

CCA, authorized by the State of New York Public Service Commission, enables municipal governments to to get the community more involved in making decisions about their energy consumption and supplies.

Own My Power, authorized by the City and Town of Ithaca, New York in 2025, is a program to engage, educate and enable any energy users to transition from a consumer of grid and pipeline service for their energy needs to an owner of onsite renewable energy systems for your power, heat and transportation needs.

Own Your Power will focus on energy projects at the building and block level for ownership and use by neighbors.
